    NY Infantry participated in service at the Siege of Yorktown, Battle of Williamsburg, Seven Pines, White Oak Swamp, Expedition against Charleston, SC, and Little Washington, NC, Battle of Drury’s Bluff, Bermuda Hundred, cold Harbor, Siege Operations against Petersburg and Richmond, among many others.  The Regiment lost a total of 235 men through battle or disease.

    , 1863, “All quiet on the Newport River,” S.E. Skinner writes to his Friend Mate about the playful dealings with Negroes and the capturing of a boat.
    Also included is a beautiful patriotic cover with a detailed poem that begins, “We are coming, Father Abraham.”
    Cover is possibly not associated with the letter.
    “…I was right smart glad to receive a letter from you. I have heard of that soldier boy you spoke of. He sometimes dreams of attending paring bees playing snap and Ketcham.
    Ha ha. I should like [to have] been with you and Opal on that grand escape you spoke of.
    I suppose it was a strategic movement. I didn’t understand as you captured anybody.
    I took a tour up the Newport River, four or five miles, up through the woods. We captured a boat up the work in the woods…We are pleasantly situated at present. I should be contented to stay here as long as I stay in the service…The 98 guerillas are mostly well and in good spirits, wide awake and full of fun.
    “The boys have lots of fun with Darkeys that pass by.
    They ask them if they can sing, dance or play the banjo…They can make music. They are a harmless innocent class of beings. Make them believe or do anything. The boys fool them the worst way, make them believe that one of us is the Chaplain of the 98

    That he will preach to them at such a time…Tell them that Uncle Sam will be there…They say they will do anything for the Yankees…S.E. Skinner…Direct to CP 98 Regt., N.Y.S.V. Newbern”
