W.D. Richter's directorial debut starred Peter Weller, Ellen Barkin, John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum, and Christopher Lloyd. While not a commercial success, it's gone on to become one of the biggest cult classics of the 1980s.
According to Richter's intensive background wizardry, our hero Banzai utilized his high-tech cube-like "OSCILLATION OVERTHRUSTER to allow his Jet Car to drive through solid matter.
The replicas continued to have a long lifespan in Star Trek as props and set dressing in multiple episodes. Its uses include:
-Geological scanner in TNG: "Pen Pals"
-Medical scanner in DS9: "Equilibrium"
-Part of Ty-Gokor in DS9: "Apocalypse Rising"
-Part of a mine in DS9: "A Call to Arms"
-Medical device in DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars"
-Xindi devise in ENT: "Anomaly"
-In the mining control room in ENT: "Demons"
Perhaps most notably, it appears in the ENTERPRISE episode "Terra Prime," in which BANZAI star Peter Weller guest starred as Terra Prime leader John Frederick Paxton.
Two of these replicas sold at auction via Christie's in 2006 for over 00 and have only become rarer in the decade since.
