    Groundbreaking Special  Effects
Pioneering Visual Effects Artist Douglas Trumbull and animator Bruce Logan created HAL 9000’s computer displays.
Charts from scientific journals were photographed onto film and
sandwiched together in front of a diffuse light source to be re-photographed by an animation camera.
Although modern LCD displays would have been ideal for displaying the HAL 9000 status screens,
the technology didn’t exist in the 1960s.
To simulate flatscreens, the set designers put rear-projection material and a 16-millimeter film projector
behind each square hole in the walls of the set.
The random sequence of projected film loops created a seemingly endless variety of colorful displays.
    How We Did It
MRG's source material was the movie itself.  Sequences that were featured prominently in the film  were carefully studied
frame-by-frame.  Every effort was made to accurately reproduce these displays using modern technology.
    More than 30
sequences were animated for this project.
    Macintosh OS X 10.4 - 10.13
    &
Windows 10 screensaver plays sequences in random order.
A new experience every time it plays.
video format (MP4) is playable on
    any
    computer or display device
